Why Your Workspace Needs Nature: The Power of Biophilic Design

Let’s be honest—most of us spend the majority of our day indoors, often in offices that are bare, grey, and uninspiring. Yet when it comes to our homes, we instinctively reach for warm tones, natural textures, and lush greenery. Why? Because we crave connection with nature. It’s in our DNA. Thankfully, architects and designers are catching on. A growing movement called Biophilic Design is reshaping how we think about the spaces we live and work in—bringing nature back into our daily lives in meaningful, restorative ways.

What Is Biophilic Design?

Biophilic design is more than just adding a few plants to a room. It’s a thoughtful approach to creating environments that satisfy our deep, biological need to connect with nature. According to the Human Spaces Report, it’s about designing spaces that make us feel good—mentally, physically, and emotionally. And Designers are using the 6 Pillars of Biophilic Design to achieve this.

Environmental Features
Think wood, stone, plants, water, and sunlight. These elements ground us and create a calming atmosphere.

Natural Shapes and Forms
Curves, spirals, and organic patterns mimic the forms we find in nature, adding softness and flow.

Natural Patterns and Processes
Sensory variation—like changing light, seasonal textures, or layered materials—keeps spaces dynamic and engaging.

Light and Space
Natural and filtered light, open layouts, and cozy corners help us feel both energized and safe.

Place-Based Relationships
Using local materials and referencing cultural ecology creates a sense of belonging and identity.

Evolved Human-Nature Relationships
Spaces that reflect our historical bond with nature encourage care, stewardship, and emotional connection.

Why Biophilic Design Matters

As we can see it isn't just about creating a visually pleasing environment, it’s about enhancing how we feel and function within it. Improving our Wellbeing, Productivity & Creativity.

Nature has long been recognised as a natural stress reliever. Offices that feature natural light, greenery, and water elements consistently report higher levels of employee wellbeing. Even something as simple as a view of trees or a green wall can help reduce mental fatigue and lower cortisol levels.

The benefits go beyond mood as well. Research shows that access to nature can reduce sick days and improve overall health. And when people feel better, they perform better. The natural elements help us manage stress and stay focused as well as boosting creativity. Studies show that using green, yellow, and white tones boost motivation, inspiration, and happiness. Including plants and natural light spark more ideas and innovation, while grey, sterile spaces tend to drain energy and enthusiasm.

By incorporating the above we can create an environment that is not only pleasant to work in but brings employee wellbeing to the forefront, which seems a win-win for everyone.
